Gov. Diclas Highlights WWII Sacrifices in Lecture for Benguet Students

Governor Melchor Daguines Diclas underscored the importance of preserving Benguet’s World War II history as around 100 college students learned about the bravery and sacrifices of Cordillera guerrillas who fought Japanese forces and helped liberate the province.

The lecture, held at the Benguet Provincial Capitol on August 17, 2026, formed part of the province’s 81st Liberation Day celebration. Participants included students from the Cordillera Career Development College and members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines–Benguet Council.

Researcher Betty Listino shared accounts of iBenguet guerrillas who served with the 66th Infantry Regiment of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines–Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL). Dr. Ermilinda Guinaran, whose father was a member of the regiment, also shared stories about the experiences and sacrifices of wartime heroes.

Diclas emphasized that learning about the province’s wartime history can help young people appreciate the values demonstrated by the previous generation, including courage, leadership, patriotism, sacrifice, and service.

The activity also sought to deepen students’ appreciation of Benguet’s role in the province’s liberation and encourage them to carry the lessons of the wartime generation into their own communities.
